Derek Prosser is a proud husband and father of his two children and his dog. Raised on the frozen tundra of North Dakota, he was indoctrinated with lifelong values of hard work, compassion, common courtesy and the importance of family. Although not a native Texan, he developed a love for the diversity, culture and, in particular, cuisine of Texas while attending law school in Houston. He enjoys spending time with his family and friends, watching way too much televised sports, and playing plenty of golf.
After law school, Derek moved from Texas to the Washington D.C. metro area to pursue his legal career. Admitted to practice law in Virginia, he began his legal career by defending questionable conduct of high-profile politicians. Not necessarily sold on that particular practice area, he took a chance with a small firm that had just launched a bankruptcy practice and began to perfect his craft, particularly in the areas of Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy. Eventually, his attention to detail and commitment to his clients was noticed by one of the preeminent and most established bankruptcy firms in northern Virginia. It was there where he shed the bankruptcy training wheels and gained considerable knowledge and expertise in all aspects of bankruptcy, including consumer and business bankruptcies, but also Trustee litigation on behalf of the bankruptcy estate, creditor litigation and other necessarily related practice areas such as real estate, debt negotiation and civil litigation. In recognition of his skill and expertise, Derek was rewarded by being named partner in January 2013.
In June 2013, after 6 successful years in Virginia, Derek and his family moved back to Texas to be closer to family and friends. Newly admitted in Texas, he intends on transferring the knowledge and expertise he gained in Virginia to the future clients of Toronjo & Prosser Law. His goal is to establish a well-respected firm, in the eyes of both clients and peers, and one whose mission is always a “Clients First, Counsel First” mentality. From his experience, he understands that clients need help and need answers, and that in order to properly address those concerns, clients need to deal with an attorney first and always, not just an assistant or paralegal. By effectively counseling from the outset of a case, Toronjo & Prosser Law can anticipate and address potential problems before they arise, as opposed to when they’ve already surfaced (the “Counsel Later” approach), and, in the end, strive for a seamless representation.
